Light Up Your Life Society in Stony Plain is hosting its very first symposium on grief and loss on April 28.
Linda McCreath, Light Up Your Society chair, said due to society’s involvement with the WestView Health Centre Hospice patients and families, the society has become aware there’s a need for it in the Tri-Region.
“There are many people who are struggling to cope and/or find ways to deal with their grief or loss,” she said.
The guest speaker at the one-day event, Dr. Jody Carrington, will touch on various grief-related topics. They include anticipatory grief, grief and healing, children’s grief and helping someone who is grieving.
Carrington, a clinical psychologist, has spent most of her career working with children and families who have experienced trauma and loss.
Afternoon sessions include:
* Wilson Quan, Edmonton Police Services, presenting on his work with secondary trauma and PTSD support
* Mystical Stone Yoga, Melyssa Guerrero-Gill presenting on mindfulness and the power of our breath to bring stillness and peace for our well being
* Windsong Writing & Wellness, Lynn Gale presenting on the positive effects of journaling to find peace along one’s path through grief and loss
* participants will also enjoy and appreciate the calming and peaceful guitar stylings of young, local artist, Don Bartlett
The symposium is open to all members of the community but is geared mostly towards adults and young adults.
Registration cost, including lunch, is $40. Doors open at 8:30 with the program until 3:30 p.m.
The Light Up Your Life Society is hosting the symposium in partnership with FCSS Stony Plain and FCSS Spruce Grove, Parkland County, and CSPP (Coordinated Suicide Prevention Program).
In addition, the society received financial sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Stony Plain and Mirror Image Decals & Signs for the event.
