Community Libraries – More Than Just Books!

August 24, 2018

What comes to mind when you think of the library?  The smell of dust, the whispers of patrons, the dark corners where no one would dare to go?  How about decimal numbers and the sound of pages turning? These are just a few images that come to my mind!  I may be dating myself, but when I frequent the Spruce Grove Library or the Stony Plain Library, this is not what I experience!  These libraries are modern, bright, and bustling with activity. Yes, there are lots of books on large shelves, but today, these libraries offer so much to our community that I want to highlight a few activities and events that these libraries offer!  For instance, did you know that with your free library card, you have full access to all eresources? Ebooks, streaming video, educational databases and the like? That is only the beginning! These libraries also offer other media, such as movies and music, video games, educational DVDs, computer and internet access, and the ability to photocopy and print 3D printing.  I have even been able to check-out exercise DVDs that would have cost me to buy and then get bored with! An addition to these physical features, both libraries have a plethora of programs and events for both children and adults. There are writing clubs, pokemon clubs, robotics programs, toddler and baby storytimes, family game and movie nights, building clubs, chess clubs, after-school programs, teen clubs, craft and scrapbook circles, and ESL classes.  There are classes on nutrition, technology and art. These libraries also host support groups of various kinds. Let’s take advantage of all these things to do, see and learn in these community libraries!
