Spruce Grove firefighters raise $18k for Muscular Dystrophy Canada

Jordan Hoffman, a Spruce Grove Fire Department firefighter, was up on the fire hall’s rooftop for four days straight.
The annual Muscular Dystrophy Rooftop Campout was in its eighth year this year, running from Feb. 19 to 22. The event hosted by Firefighters Charitable Foundation in Spruce Grove and City of Spruce Grove raised about $18,000.
In the last eight years, the firefighters have raised more than $200,000.
Hoffman said this year was the second coldest in the event’s history with -30 C below weather.
“It was -41 one year, it got close to be -30 for one or two nights this go around, so it was cold” he said.
But Hoffman was warm in a tent with warm blankets and a lot of coffee donated by the community.
He said the event has become popular over the years and people who stopped by to make donations also donated food supplies for the firefighters.
Firefighters took turns to stay on the roof at all times.
People who stopped by chatted with the firefighters and put their donation in a boot.
“A boot was hung up to a bell and they would put the money and ring the bell and we would take the donation,” he said.
Firefighters also collected money at grocery stores and online. Hoffman was grateful for the generosity of the community and businesses.
“They take the time to come over, ask us questions, see how we are doing. This way we get to know our citizens and it’s a good booster,” said the 28-year-old.
The money will go towards Muscular Dystrophy Canada where it will be used for equipment like wheelchairs and research.
The annual event mimics what people with the condition go through, said Hoffman.
“Their muscles cease up and it’s hard for them so we mimic that by staying up on the roof and it being really cold,” he said.
